We all know that Iraq is a hot bed for terrorists, and ISIS is the driving force behind most attacks across the world.
I’m on the internet all day, everyday. As I watch the news ticker report on the evil that is ISIS, I sit here wondering what I would do if I was ever caught in the middle of a terrorist situation.
This was the case for Ako Abdul Rahman, a civilian living in Kirkuk, Iraq. His home was in the middle of a ‘kill zone’ and he was constantly dodging fire from terrorists on a daily basis. He soon realized that he needed protection. He saved money, then went to the local auction and bought himself an early 90’s bulletproof BMW 7 Series for $10,000.

On October 21st, ISIS carried out a series of attacks in Kirkuk and that’s when Abdul Rahman stepped up for his people. Not only did he drive his bulletproof BMW right through enemy fire to save those who were injured, but he returned several times to collect as many people as he could. He ended up rescuing 70 people from the ‘kill zone’ including some who had already fallen.

“I told myself, this is the right time to help people, this is the right moment to do it. I am a fighter and I have a bulletproof car, shame on me if I can’t help,” se stated. “I kept telling myself, my people are in danger, they need me, my city is in danger, I have to protect it.” The sheer bravery it took for him to drive head on into the belly of the beast and save his people is something that I could never comprehend. Really puts things into perspective.

The city of Kirkuk later recognized Abdul Rahman’s bravery during a meeting at the governor’s office. BMW also reached out to him offering to buy him a brand new car for his bullet-ridden 7 Series so it could be displayed in BMW’s museum, but he turned down the offer. Instead, he took his car to the repair shop and got to work. He eventually returned it to working order, later stating the he “only did what every Iraqi should do.”
